Six months old

Paul turned six months old this week. Hard to believe! For his half birthday, he decided to sleep longer than he's ever slept before--almost nine hours in one stretch! I blame it on getting his shots the day before. He certainly hasn't given us a repeat performance! He now weighs 17 lb, 6 oz, and is 27 1/2 inches long. That puts him in the 50th percentile for weight and the 90th percentile for height. It's funny that everyone always comments on how he's such a big baby, when his weight is just average. Jonathan says it's because his head is on the large side. (True.) And he does have a pleasant amount of baby rolls! =) Chubby babies are so adorable!

Paul has been rolling around like crazy. I've had to start watching what's on the floor before I lay him down. I'm afraid we're going to have to sort through the toys pretty soon, and put the smaller ones out of reach. Won't his brother love that! We got the high chair down out of the attic the other day. "We have a family of four around the table!" Jonathan commented the other day. We're ready to start Paul on some fruits and veggies. Just waiting for Jonathan to be home at the right time. He wants to witness the reaction. Paul now has three of his bottom teeth, and he's working on a fourth. I wasn't expecting any more so soon after his bottom two came in, but that certainly explains the chewing on the pacifier so much. I'm excited for Paul to start drinking out of sippy cup, so that he can get liquid from another source besides me! I'll definitely start encouraging it sooner than I did with Benjamin. About 95% of the time it isn't an issue, but there certainly have been a few occasions when a bottle would have been nice! I never understood when moms would say, "He won't take a bottle." I thought, just stick it in his mouth. After Paul, I understand. And when I'm the person who would feed him the majority of the time, it really isn't an issue, anyway. So, I've gone on long enough with this post too. Hope you've enjoyed the updates!

Potty training--week #1

WARNING: This post may contain explicit content. Read at your own risk, preferably not during the consumption of food!

Benjamin has completed a week in undies. He has done fairly well with #1. We still have a long way to go with #2! I don't know what it is, but there's just something extremely disgusting about cleaning poop out of underwear! I guess it's no different than the days of cloth diapers. At least he is still pooping though, and isn't holding it in, as I've heard stories about. He is recognizing when he needs to pee, though, so that's been good. We're still having accidents, but at least he knows when he needs to go. He's also been staying dry at nap time, and was dry one night as well. (I've been putting him in diapers at nap and bed time.) So, at least I know the bladder control is there. We've been doing pull-ups out in public. That's been going well. He's used several different public restrooms, so I'm glad he's okay with that. We had a few days of using the kitchen timer--when it went off every hour or so, he was supposed to try and go potty. We had a Pavlov thing going, but now he doesn't want to use it anymore. I guess it's better if he just learns to listen to his body, anyway. Benjamin has been extra clingy this week, I'm guessing because of trying to learn this new thing. He gets pretty upset when he has an accident. I try really hard not to make a big deal out of it, and try not to show how grossed out I am by cleaning up the poop. =) So, all in all, it hasn't been bad, but we've still got a ways to go! I'm sure this has been much, much more than many of you wanted to know, but there you have it--you were warned! =)

Playing in the snow

Yum! Nothing tastes better than fresh-fallen snow!

Not sure about the sticks protruding from the snowman's stomach and back, but Benjamin thought they were necessary!

Potty training

Well, I've finally decided to earnestly work on the potty training. Benjamin has really shown very little interest on his own, so I'm forcing the issue. He's a few days away from three years old, so I think it's time. Today wasn't bad. We put the undies on this morning. He had two accidents, and five successful "tinkles." He got a reprieve this evening, since we went to church for Ash Wednesday service. So far, I tell him to sit on the potty. He hasn't voluntarily done it, or said he has to go. He said he's ready to do it again tomorrow, so that's good. =) Not that he has a choice!

Whirlwind Week

This past week or so has been a very emotional, exhausting week for our family. A week ago Thursday, the 4th, I learned that my grandma B. was in the hospital with pneumonia. At age 93, this kind of thing can be pretty serious. By Saturday afternoon, she had passed away, with her son and daughter at her side. The funeral was set for Tuesday, in southern Illinois. We had plane tickets to fly out to Colorado on Monday for our niece's Baptism. So, we called the airlines, and got our flight changed to fly into St. Louis on Monday evening. And then, we flew out to Denver on Wednesday. To add to the mix, was all of the canceled flights and delayed flights because of the big snowstorms out East and the rest of the country.

In the end, we made it to both "celebrations of life"--my grandma's funeral and Bella's Baptism. Even though the funeral was a sad occasion, we were glad to introduce Paul to several relatives who had not met him yet. And we also got to meet our new nephew, James. Here are a few pictures taken in IL.
